Upon completion of this course the Student will understand; the physical mechanics of Hacking a pin tumbler lock, the ethics behind lockpicking, and will successfully pick a five pin lock.
There is a maximum of 10 participants. Cost of this event is $24.96 members and 34.96 non members. Includes; Class, 2 Picks, and a Tension Wrench.
Woodworking 101
Knox Makers - Woodworking 116 Childress St SW, Knoxville, TN, United StatesThis class will cover topics related to safe and correct operation of equipment within the woodworking area. This is the authorization class for the area and is required prior to using the equipment. Safe practices will be demonstrated and learned by a hands on approach in the context of taking rough lumber through the process of milling and operation of all equipment in the space. If you have previously paid and attended a wood authorization class then we encourage you to audit the class free of charge at any time.
Cost of the event is $19.96 and is for Knox Makers members only.
Laser Cutter 101
Knox Makers - Classroom 116 Childress St SW, Knoxville, TN, United StatesThis is an introduction class to our laser cutter, Moonraker. Tracy will lead attendees of this class as they learn the basics of laser cutting, make a simple design, and then engrave and cut out the design using the laser cutter in our space. This class is intended for members who have not yet been authorized to use Moonraker or need/want a review of its operation.Laptops will be provided for this class.
If you were authorized on Goldfinger, there is no need to take this class. For a review of the new laser, please stop by the shop after this class or on a Tuesday to get a tour of the new machine.
Help installing the software on your own laptop can be provided outside of class.In class we will be using Inkscape and the laser cutting extension bundle we’ve put together for it. There is a minimum of two participant and maximum of five participants.

Cutting Torch 101
Knox Makers - Blacksmithing 116 Childress St SW, Knoxville, TN, United StatesThis is the Authorization Class to use the oxy-fuel cutting torch.
We will spend some time going over safety and then move on to operation of a cutting torch. We will cut out some basic shapes as well as learn some other tricks you can use a torch for.
Students should wear natural fiber clothing (jeans, cotton shirts, etc) NO polyester, spandex or "tech" style clothes. Socks and shoes are required, NO sandals or open toes.
If you have own PPE- please bring safety glasses, leather gauntlets, shade 5 cutting goggles/glasses, and a welding shirt/jacket. *If you do not have this yourself do not worry! We will have gear for you to use!*
Making Metal Pumpkins
Knox Makers - Metalworking 116 Childress St SW, Knoxville, TN, United StatesLet’s make steel pumpkin decorations that don’t rot over time. If you don’t paint them, they just get more orange! Amos will demonstrate how to make a metal pumpkin, and then, attendees of this class will be let loose on the metal shop to make their own permanent decoration. Amos remain at the shop to help class attendees with their pumpkins. A 20′ stick of rebar will be included with the class fee, and the scraps bin at the space is also available.
To attend this class, you should have taken the metal shop introduction class, blacksmithing authorization class, or demonstrate proper metal-working knowledge. The skills exercised in this class will include: cutting, mig welding, grinding, potential for plasma cutting, bending, potential for blacksmithing, and shop clean up!
There will be a fee of $14.96 for current Knox Makers members. Due to the current local COVID situation, the class size is small and members only. If the class fills up too quickly another will be scheduled. There will be a maximum of 6 spots for this class, and a minimum of 2 tickets must be sold. If the class minimum is not met 48 hours prior to class start time, the class will be canceled and all tickets will be refunded. We cover propane forge operation, zone safety, basic hand forging, and nail making. At the completion of the class, members will receive a key to access the forge and foundry building.
Proper attire is natural fiber clothing such as cotton jeans and T-shirts. Cotton/polyester blend is OK but synthetic clothing or other materials that can melt are unsafe. We have eye protection available but suggest you bring your own if you have them.
Anatomy of a Lock And Key
Knox Makers - Classroom 116 Childress St SW, Knoxville, TN, United StatesThis Is the Authorization class for the “Lock Pin/LockSmith Station”. Station is (will be) located in the machine area and is equipped with Pinning Kits and Key Duplicator.
We will go over; safety, proper use of a key duplicator, the parts of a lock and key. In addition we will also Explore the engineering behind the modern pin tumbler lock, and rekey a 5-pin & 6-pin “Schlage” lock cylinder. This is the class for; challenge lock pinning, rekey of household locks to match the same key, general overview on how locks work and why, basic locksmith intro.
“The pin tumbler lock is a lock mechanism that uses pins of varying lengths to prevent the lock from opening without the correct key. Pin tumblers are most commonly employed in cylinder locks, but may also be found in tubular pin tumbler locks.”
Upon Completion of this Course the Student will have the knowledge to properly identify and understand the relationship between a lock and its key, Further, they will have an introduction on how to rekey pin tumbler locks.
Machining 100 – Intro To Machining
Knox Makers - Machining 116 Childress St SW, Knoxville, TN, United StatesBilly will give you a basic introduction to the machining area. This class will begin with a tour of the machining area with a, in-depth discussion of each tool, it’s uses, proper procedures, and safety. At the end of this class, all participating members will be authorized to use the drill press, box pan brake, handtools, and the horizontal bandsaw.
Milling 101 – Bridgeport Mill Tool Authorization
Knox Makers - Machining 116 Childress St SW, Knoxville, TN, United States** Intro to Machining is a prerequisite class. You have to complete the Intro to Machining class before you can take the Milling 101 Class. **
In this class you will receive basic hands on experience in operating a Bridgeport Series I J-Head milling machine. During this 3 to 4 hour class, Billy will go over the basics of tramming the head of the mill, tramming the vise, edge finding, work holding and setup, drilling , side milling, and top/end milling operations. You will also learn the basics of the DRO (digital read out), the table power feed, and basic care of the mill. This is a tool authorization class and once completed you will be authorized to use the milling machine and Knox Maker members will receive a key need to operate the mill. Intro to Machining is a prerequisite class.
There will be a fee of $24.96 for members.. There will be a maximum of 4 spots of this class, and a minimum of 2 tickets must be sold. If the class minimum is not met 48 hours prior to class start time, the class we be canceled and all tickets will be refunded.
Milling 201 – Advanced Bridgeport Mill Tool Authorization

This is an accelerated class designed to get you checked out on the Bridgeport Series I J-Head milling machine. This is a faster paced class than the Milling 101 Auth class and assumes you've had some experience milling with a Bridgeport or Bridgeport type machine. Like the Milling 101 class, Billy will go over the basics of tramming the head of the mill, tramming the vise, edge finding, work holding and setup, drilling , side milling, and top/end milling operations. Pumpkin Carving with Power Tools
Knox Makers - Arts and Crafts 116 Childress St SW, Knoxville, TN, United StatesBring your own pumpkin (none are provided) and (optionally) your own hand power tools and we'll help each other make Jack-o'-lanterns with them. Primary tools to be used are hand drills and reciprocating saws. Masks are required in accordance with current Knox Makers policy.
Creating Wood Inlays

In this class you will practice this technique and create an inlay of a leaf on a piece of ash stock. You will be using marking knives, routers, gouges, chisels and the bandsaw. All materials and tools will be provided, however if you have your own marking knife or gouges you would prefer to use I encourage you bring them.

Mig Welding 101
Knox Makers - Metalworking 116 Childress St SW, Knoxville, TN, United StatesIntro to MIG welding.
This is the Basic startup class for using the MIG Welder in the Metal Shop.
We will spend about 30 minutes on basic safety and area requirements.
Expect an hour or so of hands on setup and shared MIG welding time (more if needed.)
*The class may run a bit short or long depending on students needs. *
Students should bring their own Welding Shield, gloves and other PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) if they have them.. but these are not required. The Metal Shop has all the required equipment for those who don’t have their own.
