Woodworking 202 – Advanced Basics
Knox Makers - Woodworking 116 Childress St SW, Knoxville, TN, United StatesYou MUST have completed Woodworking 102 “Woodturning Basics” prior to taking this class. This class is a continuation of basic woodturning skills beyond spindles and it will include a brief safety reminder. There will be a short discussion regarding the variety of projects that can be accomplished on a wood lathe: utilitarian, decorative and artistic. Turning skills covered in this class will include: resourcing, preserving and preparing wood for turning; options for mounting wood on the lathe; the vast variety of tools, how they are used and sharpened; other materials that can be turned on a wood lathe; sanding and finishing options. Hands-on opportunities will include, but may not be limited to if time permits, starting a hollow form such as a bowl.
Class members are encouraged to bring eye protection (full face shields are ideal. Do not wear any long, loose-fitting clothing, long sleeve shirts, bracelets, rings or low hanging neck chains. A hat would be appropriate if you don’t want to be picking woods chips out of your hair.
Woodworking 102 – Woodturning Basics
Knox Makers - Woodworking 116 Childress St SW, Knoxville, TN, United StatesThis is the basic authorization class for using the wood lathes in the wood working zone. In this class Neil will begin by covering the basics of how to operate a wood lathe safely. The rest of the class will focus on turning a spindle which is characterized by turning a piece in which the grain of the wood runs parallel to the bed of the lathe. Some examples of spindles include table and chair legs, baseball bats, and candle sticks. You will be shown how to prepare and mount the wood on the lathe. There will be a demonstration of how to use and sharpen the tools that are appropriate for turning spindles. The last half of the class will be dedicated to taking turns with hands-on experience using each of the tools.
Class members are encouraged to bring eye protection (full face shields are ideal. Do not wear any long, loose-fitting clothing, long sleeve shirts, bracelets, rings or low hanging neck chains. A hat would be appropriate if you don’t want to be picking woods chips out of your hair.
There is a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 5 attendees. If the minimum is not met 24 hours before class starts, the class will be canceled and ticket purchases refunded.

Make a Mallet/Thor Hammer

A wedged mortise and tenon will be used to fix the head to the handle and made using table saw jigs, advanced layout tools and techniques, hand saws (crosscut back saw), router plane, hand planes, chisels and possibly a few extras. A joinery mallet is an essential addition to any tool chest. If you don't have a tool chest then just look rad about town toting your bespoke Thor hammer. All tools and materials will be provided. Creating Wood Inlays

In this class you will practice this technique and create an inlay of a leaf on a piece of ash stock. You will be using marking knives, routers, gouges, chisels and the bandsaw.
