Woodworking 102 – Woodturning Basics

Woodturning

This is the basic authorization class for using the wood lathes in the wood working zone. In this class Neil will begin by covering the basics of how to operate a wood lathe safely. The rest of the class will focus on turning a spindle which is characterized by turning a piece in which the grain of the wood runs parallel to the bed of the lathe. Some examples of spindles include table and chair legs, baseball bats, and candle sticks. You will be shown how to prepare and mount the wood on the lathe. There will be a demonstration of how to use and sharpen the tools that are appropriate for turning spindles. The last half of the class will be dedicated to taking turns with hands-on experience using each of the tools.

Class members are encouraged to bring eye protection (full face shields are ideal. Do not wear any long, loose-fitting clothing, long sleeve shirts, bracelets, rings or low hanging neck chains. A hat would be appropriate if you don’t want to be picking woods chips out of your hair.

There is a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 4 attendees. If the minimum is not met 24 hours before class starts, the class will be canceled and ticket purchases refunded.
