Tormek Authorization and the Art of Knife Sharpening

The Tormek system offers state-of-the-art control, consistency, and mastery over producing extremely sharp edges. In addition to a comprehensive overview of the Tormek system. This class will teach not just how to sharpen, but how to choose an edge profile, how to read the steel, manage the burr, and consistently produce a finely honed blade. Each participant will leave with a sharp knife, a clear understanding of the Tormek system, and the confidence to maintain their own knife collection with precision.

What You’ll Learn:

• Introduction to the Tormek sharpening system

• Filling and maintaining the water reservoir

• Flattening and dressing the stone for optimal performance

• Proper mounting and alignment of a knife in the jig

• Understanding and adjusting for the correct blade angle

• The process of establishing and refining a bevel (straight vs. curved knives)

• Marking the edge and visualizing the grind

• Raising and removing the burr

• Stropping and honing for a razor-sharp edge

• Testing the edge for sharpness and consistency

• Demonstration of additional Tormek jigs (scissors, chisels, and more)

• Cleanup procedure

There will be a fee of $19.96 for members, $39.96 for non-members.  There will be a maximum of 2 tickers of this class, and a minimum of 1 tickets must be sold. If the class minimum is not met 48 hours prior to class start time, the class we be canceled and all tickets will be refunded.

Directions: Knox Makers parking and entrance is located in the fenced area around the back of the SPARK building.

Knox Makers is a place for the Knoxville area’s engineers, artists, hobbyists, innovators, educators and entrepreneurs to work and play. We are a technology and art collective dedicated to the promotion of creativity enabled and informed by science. Our lectures, workshops, and outreach programs inspire and educate both members and the general public. Our workshop provides members with both the space for large projects and the tools to complete them. We are a non-profit educational organization supported by member dues and staffed by volunteers.
