Intro to Digital Signal Processing: Image and Sound Filtering

dsp_logo

DSP (digital signal processing) takes real-world signals such as images, sound, and sensor signals and manipulates them in many ways to make them more useful to us. Most of us have used filters to sharpen or soften images, remove noise, increase/reduce contrast etc. using our phones or computers. This often uses the so-called “convolution filter”. It may sound complicated to understand but it isn’t. In this class Ray will walk through how these filters work using image and sound demonstrations to illustrate practical uses, some of which you’ve likely taken advantage of before.

No electronics or programming background is suggested. Math will consist only of basic arithmetic, and no programming related concepts will be discussed. Python/Numpy, GNU Octave, GIMP, your smartphone, and other software can implement the filters we will discuss.

There will be a 4 person minimum. If the class minimum is not reached by midnight the night before, class will be canceled and all tickets will be refunded.

All proceeds go to Knox Makers.

Directions- Knox Makers parking and entrance is located around the back of the SPARK building in the fenced in area.

Knox Makers is a place for the Knoxville area’s engineers, artists, hobbyists, innovators, educators and entrepreneurs to work and play. We are a technology and art collective dedicated to the promotion of creativity enabled and informed by science. Our lectures, workshops, and outreach programs inspire and educate both members and the general public. Our workshop provides members with both the space for large projects and the tools to complete them. We are a non-profit educational organization supported by member dues and staffed by volunteers.
