A Guide to the Linux Shell
Linux is a free and open source operating system that has been in use since 1991. There are several versions available for different purposes, or personal preferences, and plenty of programs to run on this system. Users can navigate many Linux versions and the programs installed on them with graphic user interfaces, but one of the handiest tools in Linux is the command line.
This presentation is for those who are new or struggling to work with the Linux command line environment (or “shell”). Maybe you want to connect to a Raspberry Pi or install software. Perhaps, you have gotten partially through your project but are stuck. In this presentation, users will receive a solid foundation for understanding what the “shell” is, how to navigate and work with files, and how the shell compares to what useres do with Windows or MacOS. This presentation will also explain how to interpret some of the output you might get and how to explore and learn on your own without losing your way. There will be time after the presentation for situation-specific questions. Whether you work with MacOS using the Linux shell or remotely connect to a Linux machine or Raspberry Pi using Putty via Windows, this presentation is aimed at helping current and future Linux users have a deeper understanding for how to navigate this system.
Like all other Tuesday nights, this event is free and open to the public. Our night will begin with a Show and Share where attendees are encouraged to bring out the projects they have been working on. This is a great time to request feedback for the future direction of your project, or you can just bring out something you want to show off. We hope to see you there!
