Intro to MaKey MaKey

makey makey

Get started with MaKey MaKey! All ages, no programming or electronics experience required. MaKey MaKey is a simple electronics inventor’s kit for kids and adult kids at heart. This is a device that connects to a computer through USB and acts like a keyboard and mouse – except YOU invent the buttons! “Buttons” and mouse movements are controlled with simple conductive materials.

This workshop is perfect for maker parents, STEM and STEAM educators, librarians, hobbyists, gamers, tech entrepreneurs that want to rapid prototype inventions on the cheap, and just anyone that wants to have a fun, unique experience.

This workshop is led by James. James has worked with Joylabz as a member of their MaKey MaKey Idea Team, and has created fun projects with the MaKey MaKey such as electronic wind chimes, musical instruments made out of eggplants, and more.

Come out to learn the basics of how MaKey MaKey works, suggested starter projects like the infamous Banana Piano, tips on choosing fun materials, and more.

James will also show the steps he took to create his Hydrophobic Drum Pad using our lasercutter and Rustoleum NeverWet – this project was selected by Instructables to be featured on their homepage and in their Science category.

Like all other Tuesday nights, this event is free and open to the public. Our night will begin with a Show and Share where attendees are encouraged to bring out the projects they have been working on. This is a great time to request feedback for the future direction of your project, or you can just bring out something you want to show off. We hope to see you there!

Knox Makers is a place for the Knoxville area’s engineers, artists, hobbyists, innovators, educators and entrepreneurs to work and play. We are a technology and art collective dedicated to the promotion of creativity enabled and informed by science. Our lectures, workshops, and outreach programs inspire and educate both members and the general public. Our workshop provides members with both the space for large projects and the tools to complete them. We are a non-profit educational organization supported by member dues and staffed by volunteers.
